Minnie's story
Minnie came into CVHS' care Mid May 2018. She was in a tough situation that she was rescued from along with a cat whom has since been adopted. When she was found she was severely emaciated, dehydrated and was found to have a significant amount of fluid in her stomach and abdomen along with plastic material and a wing nut screw. She underwent immediate exploratory surgery to remove the foreign objects and fluid.
Minnie has been in a foster home while she recovered from surgery. During recovery, it was found that she would drink excessively and urinate excessively. Extensive testing was done to find the underlying causes but have been inconclusive. Our veterinarians elected to try a medication used to treat Diabetes Insipidus. While we do not know for sure this is what she has, Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is characterized by excessive thirst and thus produces a large volume of very dilute urine. We quickly seen a positive response. While Minnie still needs to have more potty breaks than some, she can now hold her urine through the night and does not drink to excess if she gets her medication twice daily. She may also have some allergies issues, but has been managed with Chlorpheniramine, an inexpensive over the counter antihistamine taken twice daily, and a prescription medicated spray.
Minnie's foster home has several cats and another medium size/medium energy dog. She LOVES the felines, but we believe she would do better in a home without another dog as she has demonstrated that she would prefer to be top dog in the home. She also becomes very reactive to other dogs when on walks. She has been around a few small children and has done great but her overexuberant personality can be a bit much for a small child. And watch out for her tail! When she wags it, it really wags! She even has had damage to the tip of her tail from wagging it too much.
She does super in in a car and prefers to ride shotgun if given the chance. After some adjustment time, she does great in the kennel. She has also started showing more interest in playing with toys. Additionally, we have found that she does have thunderstorm and firework anxiety, but the only thing she needs to get through it is your love and attention
